Finnish public healthcare is organised by municipality. Register at your nearest terveyskeskus (health centre) for primary care.

Why this matters

The public healthcare system provides affordable, high-quality care, but you need to know which health centre serves your address.

How it goes

After registering your address, you are entitled to use the public health centre (terveyskeskus) in your municipality. You can look up your health centre at your city's website. In Helsinki, you can use the Omaolo.fi service to assess symptoms or book appointments online. Many health centres now offer video consultations. A standard appointment costs a small fee (around €10–20), and there is an annual cap on fees.

  • Use Omaolo.fi (Finland-wide) for online symptom assessment in English
  • If your employer provides occupational healthcare (työterveys), use it - it is often faster
  • The annual healthcare fee cap (maksukatto) means free visits once you have paid a certain amount in a year
