Permits and registration

Check your residence permit status

If you are from outside the EU/EEA, make sure your residence permit covers your purpose of stay (work, study, family).

Before arriving - apply well in advance as it can take 1–3 months
Migri – Residence permits

Why this matters

Working or living in Finland without the correct permit type can have serious legal consequences.

How it goes

Apply for a residence permit through the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri). The type of permit depends on your reason for moving: work-based (employer-specific or continuous), student, or family reunification. Processing times vary. After arrival, you may need to visit a police station to provide biometric data for your residence permit card.

Good to know

  • Apply as early as possible - processing can take 1–3 months
  • Track your application status at migri.fi
  • Keep your permit card safe - you will need it often
  • If your permit is expiring, start the renewal process 3–4 months before
