Prepare for Finnish winter

Finnish winters are cold and dark. Preparing properly - clothing, routine, vitamin D - makes a real difference.

Before October if arriving in autumn, immediately if arriving in winter

Why this matters

Many newcomers underestimate winter. The darkness and cold can affect both your practical daily life and your mood.

How it goes

Finnish winters can see temperatures of -10 to -25°C and nearly 18 hours of darkness per day. Essential gear includes warm waterproof boots with good grip (ice is serious), thermal base layers, and a warm coat. Vitamin D supplements are recommended by Finnish health authorities from October to April. "Dark season" depression (seasonal affective disorder) is common - light therapy lamps help.

Good to know

  • Invest in proper winter boots with ice grips - falling on ice is a genuine hazard
  • Take Vitamin D supplements Oct–April - this is officially recommended in Finland
  • A light therapy lamp (kirkasvalolampu) can help with seasonal mood changes
  • Winter gear is sold at Prisma, Intersport, and second-hand at Fida charity shops
