Kallio, the hipster neighbourhood locals actually live in

Third-wave coffee, a 1928 sauna, street art behind a liquor store

150-240 min5 stopsAll year. Indoor-heavy, rain-proof.

Kallio was working-class until the 2010s, and parts of it still are. That is the point. Rents are rising but it has not turned into a theme park. You can drink a flat white next to somebody who has been drinking since nine in the morning. Both are welcome. Nobody will ask why you are there.

The walk

  1. 1

    Kallion kirkko

    Itäinen Papinkatu 2

A granite Art Nouveau church from 1912 on top of the highest point in Kallio. Free to enter. The view from the front steps covers half the city.

  2. 2

    Vaasankatu brunch street

    Vaasankatu, between Fleminginkatu and Hämeentie

On Saturday from 10 to 14, this is where Kallio eats. Sandro, Bröd, Johan & Nyström, Sävy, all within 200 metres. Queues are normal. Walk in a few doors and see who is shortest.

  3. 3

    Fleminginkatu alleys

    Behind Fleminginkatu, courtyard alleys

The back courtyards here hold some of the best street art in the city, murals that turn over every year. No official tour covers this. Look for the Alko on Fleminginkatu and walk the alley behind it.

  4. 4

    Riviera cinema

    Hämeentie 29

A small independent cinema with red couches instead of seats, a bar instead of a concession stand, and one screen. They show arthouse in original language with Finnish subtitles. Drinks allowed inside.

Check the programme before walking in. Not every film has English subtitles.

  5. 5

    Kotiharjun sauna

    Harjutorinkatu 1

The last traditional wood-burning public sauna in Helsinki, open since 1928. Separate sections for men and women. The smell of the wood smoke and birch löyly is real. Towel rental 4 euro, sauna 20 euro. No Instagram aesthetic. The experience is the point.

Go 18:00 weekdays, the locals stay to chat on the pavement outside afterwards with beers.

What tends to surprise visitors

  • •Kallio still has old-school basement pubs where a beer costs 5 euro, next door to a 6-euro oat flat white. Both are fine, pick your mood.
  • •Kotiharjun sauna is genuinely 1928. Not a restoration. The benches have 96 years of sweat on them.
  • •The church at the top of the hill has better views than any of the paid observation decks.

Where to eat

Skiffer (Torkkelinkatu 3) for pizza on flatbread, or Yes Yes Yes (Kaisaniemenkatu 2) if you want to eat like Helsinki 2026.

Practical

Metro to Hakaniemi or Sörnäinen, then walk up Hämeentie. Kallio is hilly on its north side. Kotiharjun sauna is cash or card, bring swimwear or go Finnish.
