A punchy two-day itinerary that covers the highlights without rushing. Designed for first-time visitors.
Morning: walk through Senate Square and the Helsinki Cathedral. Continue down to Market Square (Kauppatori) and the Old Market Hall for salmon soup. Afternoon: cross to Suomenlinna fortress by ferry (15 min, included in HSL ticket). Spend 3–4 hours walking the walls, exploring tunnels, maybe eating at one of the small restaurants. Back to mainland for dinner at Savoy or Kappeli for classic Finnish.
Morning: Kiasma or Ateneum art museums. Walk the Esplanade, shop Marimekko, Iittala, Artek. Lunch at Kaffa Roastery or Good Life Coffee in Punavuori. Afternoon: the Design Museum, then the Design District. Evening: book Löyly sauna by the sea — the classic Helsinki experience. Dinner nearby. Finnish nightcap at Trillby & Chadwick if you can find the door.
Buy a 48h HSL ticket (~18 €). Covers all trams, buses, metro, and the Suomenlinna ferry. Walk as much as you can — the centre is compact and very walkable.
Common mistake
Spending too long at Helsinki Cathedral — it's beautiful outside but nearly empty inside. 10 minutes is enough.
Good to know
Most museums are closed on Mondays. Plan accordingly.
