Finland is 75 % forest. Here's how to enjoy it, even on a short visit.
You can walk, camp, pick berries and mushrooms, and swim almost anywhere — private or public land. Exceptions: gardens, cultivated fields, anywhere within 100m of someone's home.
41 national parks. Nuuksio (near Helsinki), Repovesi (2h from Helsinki, lakes and cliffs), Koli (eastern Finland, iconic view), Urho Kekkonen (Lapland wilderness).
Lakes everywhere. Many have public swimming spots (uimaranta) with diving boards and changing rooms. Free. Sea swimming is colder; saunas on the shore make it fun.
Blueberries, lingonberries, cloudberries (Lapland, July–August), chanterelles. Free to pick anywhere. Don't touch mushrooms you can't identify.
Cross-country skiing (everywhere), ice fishing (lakes in January–March), ice swimming (for the brave), snowshoeing, aurora watching in Lapland.
Haltia nature centre (Nuuksio), most ski resorts, and many hostels. Decathlon in Helsinki for cheap basics.
Common mistake
Skipping the forest because "we're only here for the city". Even a 30-min bus ride gets you somewhere beautiful.
Good to know
Bears and wolves exist but are rarely seen. Ticks are a real concern — cover your legs on tall grass, check yourself afterwards.
