Births in Finnish hospitals are automatically reported to the population register by the hospital. You do not need to separately register the birth at DVV. However, you still need to give the child a name within two months. If parents are married, the child automatically gets the family name. Unmarried fathers must acknowledge paternity (isyyden tunnustaminen) - this is done at the maternity clinic before birth or at DVV afterwards.
