Get a hot work permit card (tulityokortti)

Mandatory. You cannot legally work without it.

Required for anyone performing hot work (welding, grinding, flame cutting, roofing with flame) in Finnish worksites.

Why it matters

Hot work is the most common cause of industrial fires in Finland. Insurance companies require the card. Without it the employer carries full liability if anything burns.

When to do it

Before starting any job that involves welding or flame work.

How it works

One-day course (about 8 hours) provided by SPEK-certified trainers (Finnish National Rescue Association) and many other approved bodies. Covers fire risks, temporary hot work areas, permits, and emergency response. Cost: EUR 100 to EUR 200. Valid for 5 years. Available in Finnish, English, Estonian, and Russian at some providers.

Practical tips

  • Find approved trainers via spek.fi/koulutus.
  • You need a working ID card (henkilotunnus) to register.
  • If you only work in permanent welding booths at a factory, you may not need this card. Ask your supervisor.
  • The card is a physical plastic card. Bring it to every worksite.
