Register with Valvira (healthcare professionals)
If you work as a nurse, doctor, or other regulated healthcare professional, you must register with Valvira before starting work.
Why it matters
It is illegal to work in a regulated healthcare role in Finland without Valvira registration. Your employer cannot legally employ you until this is done.
When to do it
Before your first shift — ideally before arriving in Finland
How it works
Valvira (valvira.fi) registers all regulated health and social care professionals. EU/EEA-qualified nurses: apply for automatic recognition. Non-EU qualifications: may require a supplementary course or exam. Application takes 2-4 months. Pay fees through Valvira e-service. Keep your decision letter — some employers ask for it.
Valvira e-servicePractical tips
- Start the Valvira process while still in your home country if possible
- Apply in English if your Finnish is limited — the e-service supports it
- Keep all original diplomas; Valvira may ask for notarised translations
- Your employer may pay Valvira fees — ask before paying yourself
